I'm the one in the funky hat

The training of a food critic

Hello, I'm Raisa Marika Stohyn (Reisa Mary Stone). I've spent a lifetime collecting stories and recipes from European refugees and immigrants.

I ate pureed borshch as baby food and cut verenyky dough (perogies) with a drinking glass as soon as I could reach. My narrator, Baba, is a composite of the personalities who fed me, disciplined me, and told outrageous and heart wrenching stories of the Soviet and refugee experience.

For Ukrainians, a meaningful life is focused on hospitality and the Arts. We express ourselves largely through physical acts of nurturing, pleasure and creativity. Cooking is a significant spiritual ritual which strengthens the bodies and dushi (souls) of community, family and self. It is this spirit I strive to communicate with Baba's Kitchen.

I hope you enjoy reading and trying the recipes in Baba's Kitchen, as much as I enjoyed writing.

My other passions are singing, dancing, drawing and animals.

Most modern Ukrainians practice animal telepathy only one day a year, on Christmas Eve. I have continued the ancient tradition of Animal Communication as a daily practice, and help people create more harmonious relationships with their pets.
